A lot of people have had microdermabrasion done in a dermatologist’s office, a spa, or by a trained aesthetician, but until now, the technology has not really been available for people to use at home. The good news is that you can now do microdermabrasion at home safely and at a small fraction of the price that it costs to have a professional do it.
Is It Safe?
The microdermabrasion that is done in a salon or an office setting is the same as what you would do at home, although in some cases their version is a little more severe, which can lead to some dangerous side effects. We have all seen photographs of celebrities after they have had this procedure done, and it often doesn’t look too good.
But when you do microdermabrasion at home, you can take your time, do certain parts of your face or body at one time, and gauge the results before you move on to the next part. Having this level of flexibility is one of the reasons why it is actually safer to do it at home on your own.
How Does It Work?
When you do microdermabrasion at home, what you are doing is shooting small crystals at the surface of your skin, which are then picked up by the device that you are using. These crystals work much like a sandblaster might, sloughing off the dead skin on your face and revealing better-looking skin.
This procedure also works very well for people who have scarring due to accidents or acne, and when used over a certain period of time, it will reduce or remove the scarring completely.
What Happens Afterward?
After you have done your microdermabrasion at home, you need to make sure that you keep your skin out of the sun for at least a few days. Of course, we all have to go out in the sun for our normal daily duties, so put on a good layer of cream or lotion with SPF. This will help to protect your skin, which may be a bit sensitive.
In the meantime, make sure that you stay well hydrated by drinking lots of water and that you keep your skin moisturized day and night with your favorite lotion. This will help to keep the newly revealed layer of skin soft and supple and will help to further reverse the signs of aging.
